Internet Explorer is fucked up

31 May

While I was willing to give Microsoft a chance to make Internet Explorer better, it seems they have no plans to implement full PNG support, which is serriouly bad for all webdesigners. PNG is by far the best format out there, allowing webdesigners to use full alpha transparancy.

I could care less that there will be no further standalone IE version, but I do however think it is poor attitude by Microsoft to just throw away PNG support.
I was also hoping to hear that Microsoft would think about making their browser standard compliant, but there is also little chance of that.

Use Firebird!

Mozilla Thunderbird growing fast

30 May

Asa brought my attention to Mozilla Thunderbird’s progress. Mozilla Thunderbird is growing extremely fast. It’s nice to see, since Mozilla Mail is not something I would ever want to use, it’s simply too bloated and is not standalone.

One of the reasons I haven’t used Thunderbird up until now is that the theme was really bad, but from a screenshot posted by asa, it’s looking rather good. They do however need to change the folder-graphics. But it’s growing fast and looking good. The filesize is really high, lets hope that changes when the new Mozilla Roadmap is implemented :)

So I’m installing it now, I doubt I will use it that much since
1) It doesn’t have an win32 installer
2) I’ll be using KMail when I switch to redhat, it looks better :)

Update: Ok, if Thunderbird makes a few changes to the behavior of the program, I could easily end up using it as my default client… But right now… It does some strange stuff, and lacks a few important features

About Thunderbird
1) Get rid of all old icons
2) Much better Options window (needs icons)
3) Redesign menu-look, make sure it doesn’t feel like the bloated Mozilla Mail

neowin.net tops Exit-list

30 May

I just noticed that Neowin.net has had 863+ exits from my blog.
I concluded this was mainly because of my MSN Messenger 6.0 blog entry.

So I go to Google and search for “MSN messenger 6.0“, and will you look at that, my blog entry is number 15 on the list :)

Setting up ProFTPD

28 May

Robouk asked me to host some of his files, so I wanted to set up an FTP server on my linux machine…

I did an apt-get install proftpd and starting setting up the server.
I wanted to define robouk’s username and password INSIDE proftpd.conf, but nooo that’s not possible… I tried UserPassword, but that didn’t work, even using crypt() bugged me out, it said the password had to be encrypted using crypt(), fine.. but what “salt” should I use, the password or the username?
After trying to get this shit to work for 1 hour, I gave up and created a system-user called “robouk”, and so I got it working.

Why is it so hard for FTP servers to run on something else than system-users?

Interpreting Matrix Reloaded

27 May

I’ve talked with some people on DesignersLounge about the plot of Matrix Reloaded, about how it all work.

Because we see Neo stop the machines in the end, therefore it has to be another matrix. Zion is an illusion.
I especially like how Neo didn’t take the same step as the previous 5 versions of him had. The movie IS basically very much about making choices, I loved the scene with the Architect, the Oracle and Merovingian (and his wife, *rrrr*)…
I loved every part of the movie (no, wait… that underground-rave scene sucked!)

I found this blog entry on Dave Hyatt’s blog. It describes very well how I personally also interpreted the movie.

Also, check out the comments, the first one is very interesting indeed..

Wonderful movie, it can really make you think… great stuff.
I’m going to see it again soon, just to try and see if I can get any better ideas on how everything fits together.

For those who didn’t understand everything the architect said (like me), read this

Matrix Reloaded, Enter the Matrix

26 May

I just started playing Enter The Matrix.

I’ve seen lots of games based on movies. Games like Star Wars, Lord of the Rings etc. The LOTR game sucked, Jedi Knight II was very cool. Lord of the Rings – Fellowship of the Ring (game) sucked. LOTR TTT game looks cool, but is also made by another company and only for console games (gah). As you can see there are lots of other LOTR games comming this way, even an online game, which doesn’t really look to be *that* great.

Here comes Enter The Matrix. It has every cool effect you could imagine after seeing both movies, which is why the game is soo cool.
From all the ninja stuff, to SlowMotion, badass moves and lots of guns. I really recommend this game :)

Serendipity The Movie

25 May

Well, since I am a developer of serendipity, I sort of felt obligated to watch the movie entitled Serendipity.
It’s an extreme love-story about two people whom meet by accident and fall in love, but they both have a girlfriend/boyfriend, so they part. But they challenge faith to see if they are truly meant to be together, and then they let destiny take it’s course. Then (of cause) they have to find each other 2 years later. Because they are both getting married, and this (for some bloody reason) forces them to dump their fiance and look for each other… Guess what, they find each other in the end.

If any of you are wondering what “serendipity” means, here it is
ser·en·dip·i·ty ( P ) Pronunciation Key (srn-dp-t)
n. pl. ser·en·dip·i·ties

1. The faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident.
2. The fact or occurrence of such discoveries.
3. An instance of making such a discovery.
It’s an okay movie, the cast is great, but that’s about it… It’s a hardcore love story, so you should be able to get lucky if you see this with a girl :)

Busy busy with Serendipity

24 May

Did I mention I love PHP? Well I do

Just spent some time adding features to Serendipity.
It will now remember your Comment Details if you want it to, and delete them if you don’t. All without that silly JavaScript sterling had in mind…

I also fixed a bunch of other bugs and are working on extending the non-WYSIWYG editor, and adding support for deleting categories :)

Yes, i’ve been busy, and jannis is just sitting there!

I love PHP, someone should make a PHP Mascot(tm)!

MSN messenger 6.0

22 May

Check out screenshots (by neowin) of MSN messenger 6.0

While I like parts of the design I really don’t enjoy the fact that I need 3 seperate programs running at the same time to support all my IM needs :)

The overall design of MSN IM is getting bloated, version 5 is by far looking better than 6.0 :)

MSN 6.0 beta can be downloaded here

*Do not write shitty comments in this entry.. Bitches*
