Serendipity The Movie

Posted May 25th, 2003. Filed under Serendipity

Well, since I am a developer of serendipity, I sort of felt obligated to watch the movie entitled Serendipity.
It’s an extreme love-story about two people whom meet by accident and fall in love, but they both have a girlfriend/boyfriend, so they part. But they challenge faith to see if they are truly meant to be together, and then they let destiny take it’s course. Then (of cause) they have to find each other 2 years later. Because they are both getting married, and this (for some bloody reason) forces them to dump their fiance and look for each other… Guess what, they find each other in the end.

If any of you are wondering what “serendipity” means, here it is
ser·en·dip·i·ty ( P ) Pronunciation Key (srn-dp-t)
n. pl. ser·en·dip·i·ties

1. The faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident.
2. The fact or occurrence of such discoveries.
3. An instance of making such a discovery.
It’s an okay movie, the cast is great, but that’s about it… It’s a hardcore love story, so you should be able to get lucky if you see this with a girl :)

  3. Actually serendipity is named after two things:

    1) Manufactured Serendipity, an essay by Sam Ruby.

    2) Serendipity, the hot ass stripper in Dogma. Played by Selma Hayek.

    Hi,
I have seen the movie and the most striking sentens that i remmber vaguely is something that Jeremy (Dean) told to Jhon (Jonathan) in the yellowcab while they were going to the adress of that girl. Some thing that a philosofer (Pertitus or something like that), said and goes like this: “You have to let people under estimate you, to be abl to improve..”.
I forgot the exact name of the philosofer. I looked up for a while on the internet but in vain. Could you please mail me the name of that philosofer or some webpage where i can find that sentens.

Thank you in advance for your time.

I think that this movie in NO way lets fate take it’s course! Fate is when things accidentally happen. I would believe in fate if these people bumped into each other without looking for each other at a super market or something similar to that. However, when two people look up each others’ social security # and their account # then it’s not fate! It’s them willingly doing it…they are making the choices thus suggesting freewill. This movie suggests a false reason as to why things happen in life.

This is a good movie. It suggests people to do what their heart tells them to do.

Well in this movie…i believe they did accidently run into each other. It isn’t like they knew they were both going to be at the rink. Even after all the digging through the records..that didn’t actually help him find her. Not until he found the book. Remember she gave up on fate until she discoverd that 5 dollar bill. Even though she now knew where he lived..why didn’t she just stay there. Instead she said i guess i’ll just find him somewhere…Now how is that going to happen..

I wanted to see this movie when it first came out at the cinema, but i never got around to it. Fortunately though, i saw it on tv last night, and i it deffinitely made my top 10 fav movies.

However, i did miss the first couple of minutes, though i do think i got the jist of how they met, so what i’m about to say may not be entirely correct.

Regarding what was said about fate having nothing to do with this movie, i disagree. It was after all fate that brought them together in the first place, which lead to them purposefully searching for each other later in the movie.

Anyway a great movie, that all should watch. :-)

I finally saw this movie and instantly related.

I put a book back out into the world in 1975. It was a book he gave me, “Siddhartha”, but it all of these years, I always wonder if it got back to him. Life goes on.

  34. spongebob-in-love says:

At the time of my post, i have watched the movie 10 times, possibly more. I lost track. Anyway, there is a shop here in the pike place market that sells movie scripts but alas, they don’t have this one. I bugged them to try to get a copy and they said they could look into ordering it. If they do manage to get it, I will post my findings here. Good luck everyone. Oh and the girlfriend (my Sara) that gave me the movie, well she’s off with her Lars, but I know when she finds her $5 bill I will get her back.

  36. left-wondering says:

don’t get me wrong, I loved watching this movie. my biggest gripe is that this movie makes you question your current happy relationship. is it happy enough? i start wondering if is my situation is right when i never questioned it before. now i’m stuck daydreaming about my own Sara.

did anyone get pissed at this movie for making them second guess their current relationship? I mean…they both called off engagements because of a date years earlier. is this a healthy date movie for folks in long term relationships? i can’t stop watching…but feel uneasy every time.

  37. nasir says:

Well i have been looking around for the script f this movie could anyone please help me get it or guide me.

  38. Eric says:

Ahh, I hate when I search something on google and get led to a discussion board that is long dead. It’s like looking for someone you met a long time ago and finding out they had passed away. Well, I still want to thank the people who wrote up the Epictetus quote. I’m using it in a an essay right now. Also, if that person is still wanting a transcript of the obituary, its on IMDB. I hope you’re not dead yet.

  39. Stephani says:

Like you Eric I hate finding these dead discussion boards, in fact I have yet to find one of any subject that is still alive. Just in case anyone is wondering thee book is of course, ‘Love in the time of Cholera’. It is a terribly romantic love story. a love story about young love, unrequited love, love and longing, longing and loving someone who is unavailable for fifty years. When her husband dies, he goes to see her and tells her “I have loved you for fifty years x days, and y hours….. ” ‘and have been waiting for the chance to tell you’ …….or something to that effect, (the begining of the sentance is correct) The rest of the movie is about how they get back together. If you liked Serendipity, you might want to see the movie “Love in the time of Cholera”, I saw the movie (great) and did not know it was a book. I will now be checking that book out of the library.
I am curious Eric, if your not dead, what was the essay about?

  40. Eric says:

I’m not dead yet. I’m studying to be a music teacher and my essay was my philosophy on education. I was using the quote to justify the idea that a teacher must try new things and take chances in order to develop an ideal teaching method.

I’ll have to read Love in the time of Cholera now.
