Redhat, get back here!

Posted June 15th, 2003. Filed under Projects

Well then… As you may have noticed by my previous entry, Redhat 9 was a bitter disappointment for me.

I installed debian and then installed gnome (apt-get install gnome), but it seems debian unstable is currently having some major problems with GNOME2. Therefore the GNOME desktop was very much b0rked.

I think I re-installed debian about 5 times and then I talked to a friend of mine ,who’s running redhat 9.
I told him about my problems with Redhat and he said that Redhat was running great on his laptop, which is only a little better than mine. he said that he only installed GNOME on redhat, not KDE and GNOME…
So I figured that the reason redhat sucked to bad for me, was that I had installed both.
So after giving debian a fair shot at installing GNOME2, I figured I’d give redhat another shot.
So I installed redhat again, this time only with GNOME.
And damn it was many times faster than with KDE bundled. So I then opened GAIM, added ICQ and MSN as accounts and soon found out that ICQ wouldn’t download my CIQ contacts from the ICQ server.
I was like “WHAT!”. so I did a small google search for “trillian2gaim” and sure enough, some nice guy had created a converter, the joy! So then I had everything settled with GAIM, but I was only running GAIM 5.9. The newest version is 0.64. I always want to run the latest versions of my programs (I love exploring changes :)), so I downloaded GAIM 0.64. And here comes the rpm problems again.
GAIM 0.64 depends on libgtkspell, which depends on libaspell.
So first I downloaded libgtkspell, then I had to find libaspell and install that. Really, rpm is not that clever… Compared to APT, it sucks…

But anyway, this time the update went without any problems (yes!). And so now I’m running Redhat 9, with ONLY GNOME installed! Be warned, KDE + REDHAT = PROBLEMS!
