Operating System Change

31 Oct

Well I have used Windows 2000 for almost 3 years, and Linux Debian for 1 year. It was time for a change. At work we use Linux Redhat, which has given me a rather good impression of Redhat’s capabilites in when used as a server (console-only). So I decided to install Redhat again. Last time I installed Redhat it was to use it as a Desktop, however I must admit that Linux is just not ready for the desktop market.
I am very happy with how one is running now, redhat is a nice and controlled environment to run your *server applications*. Once installed you know exactly what is installed, which is a GREAT deal more than I can say for debian.
It’s truely nice to know what is installed, and having everything placed where you want it to be. So I’m sticking with Redhat, now running with somewhat the configuration as the Wannafind servers are

I also installed a secondary harddrive on my Linux box, which will only be used to store my /www folder, containing all my websites/projects. Of course I run backup of these files each night, copying them to the primary harddrive and uploading them to my desktop (Better safe than sorry)

On the desktop side I am now using Windows XP. I have in the past been very reluctant to install Windows XP, because I found it to be somewhat memory consuming. But after installing 512 MB more RAM (1 Gb total), I decided to give Windows XP another change, and so far it’s running rather good. Of course I have removed Internet Explorer and installed Mozilla Firebird, because *damn* Internet Explorer is _sucky_!

That’s all, over and out :)

Hey. just read your blog about Linux not ready for the desktop. I would like to sugfgest Ark Linux. I have used Red Hat 8.0 & 9.0 on my desktop and wasn’t impressed with it on the destop. However, Ark Linux is a Alpha distribution that installed in less than half an hour. It is excellent for the desktop. Try it, you will love it. I agree with you about IE. Firebird rocks!

Hi, I’m sorry having to interrupt you with an off-topic item, but your dutch colleagues need your help right now. Some big american spammer, http://www.customerblast.com , has developed the bad habit of mailbombing weblogs all over the world. After an official complaint from a dutch blog, the blogsite was presented with several severe mailbombardements and even a DDOS-attack that took this site out.
Yesterday, other weblogs in Holland started mailing Customerblast, in order to get them to stop blocking weblogs, but these american spammers DDOS’ed them too, instead. Today, the united weblogs of Holland are at a full scale war with these internetpests, and would like to have as many danish friends as possible at their side, trying to take-out Customerblast with scripts.
This battle will be co-ordinated via http://www.retecool.com
Please help, and remember: you could be Consumerblasts next victim.

In what sense is Linux not ready for full desktop use yet? Lack of games or what? hehe.

Come end April, and the last of the stock Redhat Linux will be supported no more. Its going to be the end of an era as far as I am concerned. Not that I have objections to what Redhat are doing. I am one of the guys who is in complete agreement with th…
