… it’s not POP3/IMAP.
Like many of you, I also have a GMail account (tom.sommer at gmail dot com).
While I find GMail nice in many ways, especially at threading mails and mailing lists, I cannot get use to the idea of checking my mail through a browser. I normally either have my lovely Thunderbird minimized and a popup appears when I get new mail, or I just click the Thunderbird icon in the bottom of my desktop and bling it will open and check for new mail. With GMail I have to keep visiting the GMail website to see if there is any new mail. I don’t know about the rest of you, but 1 GB space is not enough to make me abandon POP3 or IMAP.

Don’t think the missing POP3/IMAP bit is the biggest problem. I find the lack of compatiblity with earlier versions of IE more annoying (you con’t even log in to your account) and the fact that so much Spam mail slips through the filter is a scandal.
Who uses IE anymore? :)
Have you tried FireFox (www.getfirefox.com)?
No problem, just open Gmail in your browser, minimize your browser, and presto, you can see how many new messages in the task bar. Now it doesn’t play a cute sound when new mail comes in, but that’s not a big deal for me.
I agree, POP3/IMAP is just not about space, is it? Its never been for me at least…
I also grabbed a gmail addy when they were floating around and I agree that the main thing that keeps me from using it full time is the lack of POP/IMAP access. I have heard that client access is planned in the the future though and im looking forward to it.
Really? Nice, but how would Google benefit from this? In terms of advertising etc.?
I’ve been having a hard time getting rid of my 6 GMail invites.
What was once almost a status symbol is now owned by everyone.
When asking someone if they want a GMail, they either:
1) Don’t want one
2) Already have one
3) Are in the exact same
if you are not desirable for the gmail but i am so please send me a link
There is a program called gmailinstaller.exe for wind0wz. This will notify you everytime there is a new email in your gmail account. Also, the installer offers the ability to send emails from browser links, as if it were an actual local email client. if you are interested in gmailinstaller you can do a search, or drop me an email, I can send it your way. I have also heard that gmail is going to offer a pop3 account at some point, however, it might be a paid for option.
Many happy days
Kevin
I use the gmailinstaller.exe for windowz myself. I don’t mind leavin the pop3 behind. There is a program that you that will allow you to use gmail with your pop3 client. I have never used it and I have no desire to, but you can try it out if you like. Its called. “pop goes the Gmail” It will allow you to use your pop3 client ( outlook or thunderbird for example) with your gmail. Check it out at http://jaybe.org/info.htm
If its any good post back for others. :-)
We have launched new IMAP service where in you can convert your POP3 account into an IMAP account without changing your email address even if your server only supports POP3.
Our IMAP server is a proxy mail server, which logs in your pop3 account and downloads email into our server and organize it for IMAP. you can set filters as well.
Click on http://www.evenmail.com/pop3-to-imap.html for more details.
IE is a waste of time, especially the older versions. Swap to Firefox – you will get less viruses, less spyware, and the web works/looks better in it.
As for Gmail, they have a program that will notify you of new mail so you need to check it every two seconds. But then I’ve always prefered web based e-mail.
I’ve never gotten spam through Gmail, not like I do at Yahoo or Hotmail anyway. 200+ a day and that is just what is caught by the bulk folder.
I don’t see how everyone having Gmail makes it less desirable. It just means everyone desired it enough to get it, and now everyone has it. The only people I find that don’t want it are people who don’t like change, and don’t get much mail.
